Honoring Tradition with Style: Designing the Perfect Gown for a Bride’s Sangjit Ceremony
Metta Febriyan Couture
When the bride came to me, she shared her desire for a gown that honored her Chinese heritage while reflecting her personal style. It’s moments like these that transform a designer’s role into something much more intimate—we become storytellers through fabric, silhouette, and detail.
We began by choosing a color palette rich in symbolism. Red was our foundation—a color representing joy, luck, and celebration. But we softened the tone with hints of gold embroidery, symbolizing wealth and elegance, and added subtle blush tones for a modern romantic touch.
The silhouette we chose was inspired by the traditional qipao, but reimagined with contemporary tailoring. A high Mandarin collar paid homage to classic Chinese design, while the form-fitting structure celebrated her figure with modern sophistication. We incorporated delicate phoenix motifs—a symbol of the bride in Chinese culture—and paired them with peony blossoms, denoting beauty and feminine honor.
Weaving Meaning into Every Detail
For Metta Febriyan Couture as the designer, it's important that every stitch tells a story. We embroidered the couple’s initials within the hem of the dress—something only the bride and groom would know. The back featured a flowing cape of sheer silk organza, representing the transition from one chapter of life to another.
The final fitting was emotional. When the bride saw herself in the mirror, framed by generations of tradition and her own identity, we both knew the gown had become more than just an outfit—it was a symbol of legacy.
The Future of Sangjit Fashion
As more brides blend heritage with individuality, the Sangjit ceremony is becoming an opportunity for meaningful fashion innovation. It's no longer just about tradition—it’s about how tradition is interpreted. And from a designer’s perspective, that’s where magic happens.
To future brides: let your Sangjit gown be more than beautiful—let it speak. Let it tell your family's story, your cultural pride, and your heart’s journey toward love.
Understanding Sangjit: A Ceremony Steeped in Symbolism
For Metta Febriyan Couture, as a bridal gown designer, every bride brings a unique story to the atelier. But when the bride walked in to plan her gown for her Sangjit ceremony, it wasn't just about style—it was about honoring heritage, family, and love through tradition. Designing for such a deeply rooted cultural celebration brought a rare blend of artistry and meaning to my craft.

The Sangjit ceremony is a cherished tradition in Chinese-Indonesian culture, representing the formal betrothal between a couple. Taking place after the engagement and before the wedding, it is often the moment when the groom’s family visits the bride’s home bearing symbolic gifts—ranging from jewelry and fine fabrics to boxes of tea, cakes, and fruits. Each item holds specific meaning: prosperity, harmony, fertility, and unity.
Designing for the Bride: A Personal Journey of Culture and Identity
Historically derived from ancient Chinese betrothal customs known as “Guo Da Li,” Sangjit has evolved into a cultural celebration that blends tradition with personal expression. While it is often intimate and family-centered.
